Szturm T, Maharjan P, Marotta JJ, Shay B, Shrestha S, Sakhalkar V. (2013). The interacting effect of cognitive and motor task demands on performance of gait, balance and cognition in young adults.Gait & Posture 38(4):596-602. Introduction: Executive cognitive functioning is a key factor in locomotor control: deficits are associated with increased falls risk. Dual-task (DT) performance results in a decrease in walking speed, however studies of DT usually do not include the visuomotor system or multiple brain areas, key for balance and locomotion. This study looks at the effects of walking speed and cognitive load (single vs. dual-task conditions) on temporal gait variables, dynamic stability and cognitive performance. Mobility limitations and cognitive impairments reduce physical and mental activity levels, predict adverse health events, and are associated with increased falls risk. These become more common with aging. The authors of this study examined the effect of walking, walking speed and cognitive load (dual-task/divided attention) on spatio-temporal gait parameters, consistency and cognitive performance, using a treadmill rehabilitation platform which allowed for walking while performing DT under controlled conditions. They used a combination of unique measures including pressure-sensitive insoles for center-of-pressure (COP) excursion measurements, and an air-mouse to measure head motions during visuo-spatial cognitive task performance. They found that treadmill walking negatively affected cognitive performance, and increased variability in gait parameters regardless of walking speed, and that walking speed affected temporal gait parameters and medio-lateral center of pressure excursion, but not cognitive performance. Trunk excursion decreased under dual-task conditions.
